Age-related vestibular dysfunction and associated imbalance has a major impact on morbidity, mortality, and health-care resources. Approximately 35% of adults aged 40 years or older in the United States have some form of vestibular dysfunction. This percentage increases to 80% for adults over the age of 65. Falls account for over 50% of all accidental deaths in the elderly. Recent analysis calculated the medical costs associated with fatal and non-fatal falls in the USA to be over $19 billion annually.
Education: Through strategic educational campaigns, to improve overall safety.Improve balance: Diagnostic evaluation allows them to understand their specific aspect on weakness.Habituation of symptoms: tailored rehabilitation interventions can improve general conditioning therefore enhance safety.Decrease disability: To improve functional capacity allow normal physical activities, reduce anxiety and depression.
Anticipating a multi-faceted impact, the project envisions individual patients benefiting from early detection, targeted rehabilitation, and increased health awareness. Societally, the research holds the potential for broader improvements in fall prevention and public health, with economic benefits stemming from reduced accident rates and associated healthcare costs.
