Over the years, S-KPF has been supporting 23 social enterprises established by CUHK professors. At the S-KPF 2024-25 Information Session, we proudly featured one of the first cohort of S-KPF funded companies, SLCO Community Resources Limited. The founder Prof Gladys Tang from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages, Faculty of Arts, along with the General Manager Mr. Raymond Wong, were invited to share their social innovation journey.
The session kicked off with a presentation by Mr. Wong, laying out the background of SLCO Community Resources. He also illuminated how SLCO Community Resources blends impact-driven initiatives with financing strategies such as government grants and foundation funds, to drive positive change within the community through sign bilingual education.
The presentation set the scene for an engaging fireside chat session, exploring the social innovation journey of Prof Tang and Mr. Wong. They recounted their experiences in steering an evidence-driven social enterprise, sharing the challenges encountered during the shift from research to entrepreneurship. Their narrative spotlighted the importance of ensuring the business sustainability of a social venture, as well as the strategies they applied to achieve their objectives. The discussions also touched upon the support offered by S-KPF and ORKTS, providing insight to prospective applicants on effectively leveraging funding opportunities for a social venture.
The event concluded on a high note with an interactive dialogue between the speakers and the audience. By sharing their social entrepreneurship journey, Prof Tang and Mr. Wong hope to inspire and encourage CUHK professors to translate research findings into real-world solutions by setting up social enterprise through S-KPF.
