As a comprehensive university, research conducted at CUHK covers a broad spectrum of disciplines. Researchers are highly encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary research. As outlined in our Strategic Plan, emphasis is put on 4 strategic research areas, including 1) China: Tradition and Modernity, 2) Innovative Biomedicine, 3) Information and Automation Technology and 4) Environment and Sustainability. The 4 areas cover a number of synergistic themes that cross the boundaries of academic units. CUHK ranked 26th globally in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2025.
Interdisciplinary Research Units
With a clear and pronounced emphasis on interdisciplinary research that crosses the boundaries of individual academic units, CUHK seeks to optimize opportunities to generate impactful outcomes. Our various research institutes and centres are set up as natural platforms for researchers from different academic departments and disciplines to collaborate on a global basis. Periodic reviews of the research units recognize interdisciplinary research endeavours.
Below are some examples of our interdisciplinary research units. A complete list of our research institutes and centres can be found here.
Research Facilities
In support of the many research activities, there are centralized facilities as well as specialized equipment and research infrastructure housed in the faculties and research units, optimized for shared use. The University has supported the acquisition of high-performance equipment (e.g., superresolution nanoscope, mass spectrometry system, multifunctional low-temperature X-ray diffraction system, arbitrary waveform generator). Introduction of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment including Cornerstone laboratories, Jockey Club STEM Labs, Histotripsy 2.0 system were enabled through generous external grants and donations.
Research Support
CUHK has formulated internal funding schemes to facilitate interdisciplinary research including those covering our strategic areas. Many of these internal funding schemes are designed to provide initial support for larger external grant applications. We have also utilized much of the funding from the Research Grants Council’s Research Matching Grant Scheme to support interdisciplinary research. There are also research postgraduate places specifically designated to support interdisciplinary research. Research outputs and impact generated from interdisciplinary research are recognized in the academic staff performance reviews, including the annual Academic Staff Development Review and the substantiation and promotion exercises. Administrative support is provided by both the central units (e.g., Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services, Library) and respective academic and research units.
FURTHER INFORMATION
The Institutional Research Information System (IRIS) is CUHK’s new institutional platform for central management of the University’s research-related information, including grants, projects, research outputs, knowledge transfer activities, prizes, and media coverage. More information about our innovation and research can be found here.

Overview
Hospital Authority Data Collaboration Lab (HADCL) is inviting enrolment for Online Health Data Exploration Workshop and applications for health big data collaboration projects for 2024.
Online Health Data Exploration Workshop Enrolment (Deadline: 24 Nov 2023, Fri)
Health Data Exploration Workshop will be conducted via Webinar on 4 Dec 2023 (3pm) to introduce services, data and platform of HADCL. Interested researchers may enroll online on or before 24 Nov 2023 at https://www3.ha.org.hk/data/DCL/WorkshopHandson.
Application for Health Data Collaboration Projects 2024 (Deadline: 15 Jan 2024, Mon)
HADCL provides a secured platform which includes over 25 years de-identified health data for researchers to conduct their health data collaboration projects. With support from data domain experts from HA and the market-leading AI and Machine Learning technology, HADCL should be able to support researchers for their interested big data / AI research topics.
To apply for the Data Collaboration Projects, the Principal Investigator (PI) must be from one of the UGC-funded Universities with written support from the associated University and necessary ethics approval for their project proposal. Interested researchers may submit their applications online via https://www3.ha.org.hk/data/DCL/ProjectApplication. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) can be found here.
Apart from the Data Collaboration Projects, researchers can also apply for access to Self-service Data Platform to explore research topics using the sample data. Please click here for details.
Eligibility
Current academic staff & researchers in CUHK who are interested in access to HADCL for conducting health data collaboration projects
Application (Submission Deadline: 15 Jan 2024, Mon)
1 | Submit online application form with project details* to HADCL office |
2 | Assess applications by HADCL steering group |
3 | Sign collaboration agreement by the organisation & undertaking forms by researchers |
4 | Prepare the required data and tools for the selected project by HADCL office |
5 | Access HADCL to start the research study by the authorised researchers |
*Remarks:
1. The HA collaborators should be HA staff who support/participate in the proposed project. It is desirable to engage them during application submission. If you do not approach the HA Collaborator for the proposed project, you may fill “N/A” in those related fields during the application submission. We will review the proposal and propose a suitable HA Collaborator afterwards.
2. Support from Organization should be issued by CUHK to prove the support on the related project. Relevant funding approval issued by CUHK can be a proof. Or a supporting letter should be issued by the supervisor of Principal Investigator who is the chairperson of department or above from the university.
Assessment Criteria
1. For public good
2. Readiness of requested data and tools
